It’s been a two-year rollercoaster, but it may finally be time for Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri to say goodbye and reportedly Newcastle United are ready to sign him.
Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri could be a “quality” signing for ‘The Toons;, according to former England right-back Danny Mills.
Xherdan Shaqiri’s absence from Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal has been explained – two Premier League clubs are in negotiations to sign him permanently ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, but according to reports Newcastle are favorites.
Mills believes Shaqiri would be a good addition to Newcastle and reckons he could excite Toon supporters playing as a No 10.
“Obviously he is a quality player. If you can get him fit… we saw what he did for Liverpool last season. He has a lot to offer.
“If the price is right and the wages are not too high it could be a quality player for them.
“They would maybe play him in a more central role, an eight or a ten role – give him a bit of license and do not ask him to track back.
“He is a player that could excite the Newcastle fans.”
Shaqiri did have a successful first season with Liverpool and will be fondly remembered by supporters for scoring two goals to help beat rivals Manchester United in 2018 and also made a huge impact against Barcelona in the Champions League semi finals.
