By Rebecca Rodriguez - November 28, 2021

Olivia Rodrigo won big at the 2021 American Music Awards. She received a trophy for New Artists of the Year, putting her at the top for the most wins in one year by a first time-nominee. The “Good 4 U” singer had more nominations than any other artist, including Artist of the Year, Favorite Music Vidoe, Favorite Female Artist – Pop, Favorite Trending Song, Favorite Song- Pop and Favorite Album – Pop. The pop star had some competition and was up against the talented Taylor Swift who was nominated as well for Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Artist – Pop and Favorite Album- Pop. Rodrigo told NME, “I’ve always looked up to Taylor since I was literally five years old. Obviously, I think she’s the best songwriter of all time, but she’s so business-savvy and she really cares about her career in that regard too — that’s been really inspiring for me to watch somebody take control of their career and their life like that.”

Rodrigo and Swift have never collaborated before, but they have met one another at the 2021 BRIT Awards back in May. Rodrigo even got a handwritten letter from Swift congratulating her on her knockout hit, “Drivers License.” In a statement to Billboard, Rodrigo said, “I don’t want to divulge too much because it’s really sweet and personal, but she talks a lot about how, I think, you make your own luck in the world. And when you do kind things to others, good things come your way.” There is also a lot of resemblance between the two singer-songwriters. On the American Music Awards stage, Rodrigo delivered an emotional performance with her guitar for her song “Traitor.”

While accepting her award, the 18-year-old said, “Thank you so much to the AMAs and to the fans who voted for this award. It means so much to me. Writing songs is my favorite thing in the whole world, and I am so grateful for everyone who has embraced my music.” The pop newcomer is paving her way in the music industry and this is just the beginning for her. She released her full-length Sour album earlier this year and continues to provide hungry fans with new music. In her latest performance at the AMAs. she had a full band live performance while engulfed by bouquets of flowers as she paints the story of her first heartbreak. The talented artists deserves her win and we imagine she’ll continue to grow in her career.
