These Foods May Boost Your Mood

With winter settling in and colder temperatures, our mood can really take a plunge, along with our energy levels and motivation. Health experts are saying that certain foods we eat can help in this case. There has been more and more research coming out that touches upon the relationship between nutrition and mental health, and nutritional deficiencies are just one factor that influences our mood. In addition, stress, poor sleeping habits, genetics, mood disorders, and our environment can have an effect on our mood. But what foods can increase our moods? It’s about specific nutrients, flavors, and smells that affect our emotions. There are several foods you can add to your diet this winter that just may help get you out of a rut and give you that well-needed boost.

The first food to add to your diet is blueberries. You can add them in just about anything, like cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, or a smoothie. In a few studies that were done, both adults and children who drank blueberry drinks had an improvement in mood about two hours after consumption. Blueberries contain flavonoids that are thought to increase blood flow to the parts of the brain that are in charge of emotions. Another addition to your winter diet could be Indian dishes like tandoori chicken and chana masala. These foods have a bright yellow color from turmeric spice. Turmeric is high in curcumin, which is a powerful substance associated with brain health. Nine studies showed that taking curcumin could potentially help with anxiety and depression.

In addition, citrus foods are great to consume as well. These include lemons, oranges, grapefruits, and clementines. You can add lemon to water to sip on throughout the day, lemon-glazed chicken, an orange salad, or even a clementine salsa. Even the sheer smell of citrus can wake you up and make you happier even before eating these zesty fruits. Believe it or not, chocolate can also be a great mood booster. But it’s not any chocolate, it’s specifically dark chocolate. Those that consume dark chocolate are 70 percent less likely to suffer from symptoms of depression than those who don’t eat chocolate. This is because it contains a psychoactive compound that can make your brain happy, so having that dessert isn’t so bad after all.
